1.  What is hearing loss?

A. Hearing loss is a condition of the outer, middle or inner ear resulting in a decrease in hearing sensitivity, volume, and clarity.

2.  What are symptoms of ear disorders and hearing loss?

A. Hearing Loss can have a rapid onset but normally occur gradually.  Symptoms may include ear pain and discomfort, ears ringing, dizziness or balance problems, difficulty understanding in church groups and crowds, asking people to repeat, needing volume controls turned higher and hearing but not always understanding speech.

3.  Is a Professional Hearing Test necessary to determine hearing loss?

A. Since hearing loss may be the result of a medically treatable condition all persons exhibited any type of ear or hearing difficulty should be professionally evaluated.  The professional hearing test will determine if the hearing loss is medically significant or a permanent sensori neural loss that could be electronically corrected with hearing aids.

4.  If hearing aids are recommended what is the fitting procedure?

A. Most patients with hearing loss in both ears will be fit with prescriptive instruments for each ear.  Your hearing Professional and Siemens, the hearing instrument manufacturer will prescribe and custom design the most appropriate hearing instrument for your specific hearing loss.  At the fitting the hearing professional will complete instrument programming and make sure the instruments are comfortable and adjusted properly.  They will complete the process by explaining insertion, removal, specific maintenance and battery procedures.

5.  Is it difficult to adjust to hearing aids?

A. NO.  Most patients find that readjusting to improved hearing is both natural and painless.  As your auditory system becomes reeducated sounds that may be initially distracting will become comfortable in a short period of time.  Remain positive!  Remembering that the adjustment period will result in significantly improved hearing in all listening environments.

6.  Will my hearing aids make a whistling noise when I am wearing them?

A. NO. Improved technology has significantly reduced electronic feedback (whistling).  Poor fit and wax impaction can cause feedback that can be corrected by consulting with your ClearValue Hearing Healthcare Provider.

7.  How long will my batteries last?

A. The style, power output, daily usage, correctly turning instruments off will determine battery life.  Most batteries last between 2 and 3 weeks.  After purchasing hearing aids the ClearValue Hearing Benefits Program will entitle you to FREE batteries by completing your online Patient Satisfaction Survey.

8.  I have tinnitus (ringing in the ears) will hearing aids help?

A. Tinnitus is normally a condition of the inner ear that is normally not medically treatable but properly vented and prescribed hearing instruments can mask the tinnitus.

9.  How long will my hearing aids last?

A.  Like most electronics hearing aid life expectancy can vary greatly between individuals.  Proper maintenance of both the ear canal and the hearing instrument will extend the life and reduce repairs.  A major benefit of the ClearValue Hearing Program is a FREE bi-annual clean and check provided by your local Preferred ClearValue Hearing Healthcare Provider.
